The White City Development is a 200.000 m² retail and leisure centre in West London. The development is spread over six levels, comprising three levels of car parking (two underground), two levels of retail and a leisure complex at roof level. The main focal point of the project is the central “Wintergarden”, an insulated space with a 7.650 m2 “free form diagrid roof”. The roof structure is formed from steel members and node elements and incorporates a mix of insulated glass units and opaque cladding modules. Waagner Biro had been appointed to complete the design, engineering and construction of the Wintergarden roof. This included the engineering and finalising of the “free form” geometry. For the construction of this project, Waagner-Biro has been awarded with the SOLID Bautech Prize 2008.
